Setting up PlayOnMac
1. Download PlayOnMac
Go to http://www.playonmac.com/en/download.html
2. Copy to Applications
Once downloaded, open the archive and copy PlayOnMac.app to Applications
3. Launch PlayOnMac
The first time you launch PlayOnMac, you'll be asked if you want to share information about your system with the developers of PlayOnMac. It's up to you.
4. First Use
The first time you launch PlayOnMac, you will have to answer some questions and it will download additional software that may be needed.
XQuartz
If you do not have XQuartz installed, PlayOnMac can install it for you. Or you could download and install XQuartz yourself from http://xquartz.macosforge.org/landing/. After XQuartz is installed, you will need to reset and launch PlayOnMac again.
Microsoft Fonts
During the first use setup, PlayOnMac will download Microsoft fonts needed for the system. It will ask you to accept a user-agreement and download and install them for you.
Install a Wine Package
PlayOnMac uses Wine to create a virtual environment for Windows software to run on a Mac. Install a version of WINE to make PlayOnMac work properly.
1. Manage Wine Versions
In the menu, select Tools -> Manage Wine Versions
2. Select a version of Wine
You can select the latest version of Wine available and click the ">" to download. (Version 1.5.18 and 1.5.19 worked for me)
3. Download Wine
After selecting which version to get, PlayOnMac will prompt you that it will install that version of wine. Click next, and when complete, you can close the PlayOnMac Wine Version Manager Window.
Creating a Virtual Drive
If you don't want to install Gamemaker and just try out the games, you can create a new virtual drive and then store all the EXEs in that virtual drive. If this is your first run of PlayOnMac, and you followed all these steps, you should see the PlayOnMac Configuration window. If not, open PlayOnMac and hit the Configure button.
1. Create new Virtual Drive
Click on "New" to create a new virtual drive then hit Next.
2. Select the version of Wine
You can select the version of Wine that you want to use. I chose to use a specific version of Wine since I had some sound issues with the System one.
3. Name the new Virtual Drive
Give a name to this virtual drive, and click next, and PlayOnMac wil create the virtual drive.
4. Open the Virtual Drive
Once the virtual drive is created, it will bring you to the PlayOnMac Configuration window. Click on the Miscellaneous tab and click on Open virtual drive's directory. This will open a finder window to where the actual files for this virtual drive are stored on your computer.
5. Copy game to Virtual Drive
Now, copy the GameMaker games to the drive_c folder. This is what would show up on a PC's C drive. You can copy the files anywhere in that folder, I chose to install them in Program Files.
6. Make a new short cut
Switch back to the General tab on the PlayOnMac Configuration window. Click on Make a new shortcut from this drive.
7. Select short cut
Switch back to the General tab on the PlayOnMac Configuration window. Click on Make a new shortcut from this drive.
8. Make a new short cut
Give the short cut a name. This is the name that will show up in the PlayOnMac window as well as a short-cut on your Mac's desktop to launch this game without having to go through the PlayOnMac menu.
At this point, you can try running the game. You may need to additionally add some libraries to this virtual drive to make it work properly (see Additional Libraries)
Installing GameMaker
You can also install GameMaker to a virtual drive.
1. Install a new program
Click on the Install button or Install a new program. The PlayOnMac Install window opens. Then click on Install a non-listed program
2. Take note of the message!
When installing, you should leave the program to install in the default location and do not Run the program when complete!!
3. Install to Existing Virtual Drive
If you did not create a virtual drive as mentioned above, you can create a virtual drive and install at the same time. However, this example will show how to install in an existing virtual drive. Click on the Edit or update an existing application and click next.
4. Show virtual drives and select it
Check off the Show virtual drive checkbox and select the virtual drive you want to install GameMaker to.
5. Skip preinstall steps
You can leave all the options blank for step to do before preinstall.
6. Select install file
Next you will be asked to select the install file. Select the downloaded Gamemaker EXE.
7. Install Gamemaker
install Gamemaker like you would on Windows. Remember! Do not have the installer launch Gamemaker when the install is complete.
8. Create shortcut
Next you will be asked to select the install file. Select the downloaded Gamemaker EXE.
